Shepherd General

Hawkes Bay - Napier

Are you looking for an opportunity to grow and develop your shepherding skills? We’re seeking a Shepherd General for our Waitere Station.

Waitere is a 2400 ha (1932 ha effective) high country sheep and beef breeding unit situated in the Waitara Valley, located 80 km from Napier and 26 km from Tutira. Waitere currently runs 6000 Romney breeding ewes, 600 breeding cows, breeding our own replacements on country which is excellent for working dogs and mustering. Some mustering may be done on horseback so experience in this area is useful but not required.

Waitere offers a supportive learning environment and as Shepherd General you will work closely with the manager and three other team members to help take on day-to-day responsibilities of stock and general work. To be successful in the role your attitude and initiative will far outweigh your experience.

 You will bring:

  • Passion for the sheep and beef industry
  • Great attitude
  • Enthusiasm to work within a supportive team
  • 1-2 years experience
  • Effective communication skills
  • 2-4 well controlled working dogs (1 Huntaway, 1 Heading, and a couple of younger dogs)
  • Commitment to high standards of quality, safety and animal welfare
  • Current and full NZ drivers licence

We offer an attractive salary with additional benefits, as well as ongoing training and personal development to help you reach your personal and career goals

The role comes with single accommodation including power, phone and internet and is handy to a variety of outdoor activities.
